Introduction
BowTied Bull has been very clear with their predictions for potential layoff timelines (Q4 2022 / Q1 2023) and has recommended an immediate strategy: increased performance and visibility in your W2 day job (including physically attending the office) and seeking a promotion.
A large portion of this community will assist you to develop secondary income streams and WiFi money (so many resources that one cannot move for tripping over them).
However some in the community will still be dependent on salaried income for whatever reason, especially as WiFi money will take time to scale. Recessions are generally not great environments for finding new or replacement jobs and become employer driven markets.
Fortunately the Jungle already contains several resources that can assist you.
It is the intent of this note to share, collate and add to the resources over time in support of the Jungle.
Blue Collar Resources
The resources below will more applicable for "white collar" roles. For support on "blue collar" jobs / industries our recommendation would be to refer to BowTied HandyMan's guide (Handy; or potentially BowTied HomeServices). Handy’s substack also includes a series on blue collar careers.

Jungle “Recruiters”
These are not (or perhaps not yet) anons who will recruit you. Along with our writing view them as a resource on the recruitment process - either to hire, or get yourself hired, and how best to manage that process.
I’m a tech recruiter and I have access to an enormous database of open positions. Anyone can feel free to DM me their skillsets and I can see what's open around the US.
We can't promise a job, but we can provide going rates, who is laying off with about 1-3 month advance notice, interview questions (sometimes) and hiring manager info so we'd be stoked to help anyway we can.
I have a large network of recruiters and hiring managers one can leverage, as well as career navigation

Jungle “Legal Aid”
We need to reconsider structure here as managing a termination / exit / wrongful dismissal occurs even earlier in the job search process. For now, we’ll collate resources here.

On the Use of Recruiters - Part I
We will now outline our thoughts "On the use of Recruiters" and where they can assist you. This will be a summary note: for a more in-depth discussion of this topic in our usual overly wordy / Au style refer to our later subscriber posts.
We will resist the urge to cover the broader landscape, and regularly seen exceptions to the rule(s) below. Here we will opt, as much as we can, for a shorter note and will try (for once) to be concise.
What is a Recruiter
The recruiter finds and “recruits” candidates (people) to fill job vacancies. The recruiter’s clients are companies that are looking to fill a job vacancy and the client pays the recruitment company a fee for success. Generally, the fee is a percentage of the salary paid to the candidate, and “success” is the candidate accepting the job offer.
The Incentives of a Recruiter
The recruiter is on a commission scheme (base + performance bonus) similar to sales roles. The recruiter is incentivised to earn money, which is fees from clients. A recruiter is there to fill roles for their company and earn themselves commission. They are not solely incentivised to be your advocate, or to act as a career counsellor or facilitator to you.
Finding a Recruiter
There are three ways to find or approach a recruiter
Being Approached by a Recruiter
Approaching a Recruiter Yourself
Either Directly,
or Via Applying For a Position That They Advertised
Being Approached by a Recruiter
If a recruiter is reaching out to you then they likely have a fairly good idea of what you do and where you sit, and may have a "suitable" role (as assessed by them) that they can use you to fill.
They'll likely need more information than what’s available “on paper” and you'll need to assess how well they know their client and market.
If they call you directly on your desk line, resist the urge to have a panic attack at the unscheduled social interaction. Simply state that you can't speak right now and either give them your mobile number or ask them to contact you via email or LinkedIN.
Even if you don't want to change jobs its sometimes worth listening to what opportunities they have and asking questions about the market.
Approaching a Recruiter Directly
Generally a recruiter will cover a certain market segment. It could be a function across certain industries (i.e. Finance managers in automotive companies) or more broader / specific (all back office and support roles for asset managers in [CITY]; sell side distressed debt analysts and credit traders; Equities in Dallas).
If you are reaching out to a recruiter directly yourself make sure you have a good understanding of the market segment that they cover. If you're not in that segment, it's highly unlikely you'll get a response. As a rough rule of thumb - you'll only be considered if you're *at most* one or two step changes outside of what they need. Many exceptions exist however, and some industries / companies / roles will be more porous.
Remember, a recruiter is there to fill roles for their company and earn themselves commission. They are not solely incentivised to be your advocate, or to act as a career counsellor or facilitator to you.
Approaching a Recruiter Via Applying For a Position That They Have Advertised
This "approach" needs a degree of care and attention as there are a number of consequences that are not immediately obvious. It is possible here to “lock” yourself out of using recruiters.
Firstly a recruiter may advertise a job on a job board such as Monster.com or LinkedIN. However, in many cases the recruiter will *not* be the only party recruiting for a particular vacancy. The client may advertise direct on both their website and other job boards and platforms, have inhouse talent acquisition sourcing directly and may enlist multiple recruiters.
This means that if you apply to what looks like multiple roles from your side you are potentially applying for the same job from multiple avenues and are "risking" cutting a recruiter out of the process. This could mean that your preferred recruiter wont be able to represent you or support you throughout the process (which could also be a good thing!)
What does this mean for you?
If you see an interesting job advertisement, consider whether you would like to use a recruiter or apply direct. In most cases, this is the decision point where you’ll have to commit to using or not using a recruiter.
How then to work out the end client or who’s working on the job?
Most recruiters will simply copy and paste the Job Description (JD) provided by the client. By googling parts of the JD, and seeing where else it appears you can get a good sense either of who the end client is, or which other recruiters are also working on filling the job. Once you've identified the possible client and recruiter(s) involved, you can then decide to apply with either of them.
How could you accidentally cut yourself out of using a recruiter?
If you have applied direct to the client than a recruiter won’t be able to represent you. This is because the client is theoretically already aware of you and will only pay fees for “new” candidates that the recruiter introduces. In some cases this could include even a previous direct application to the client from up to 6 months ago.
If you have inadvertently applied to two or more recruiters than it's generally the first one that "covers you" by phone call that will end up representing you. If you’ve applied to multiple recruiters and the client (because all the job ads looked really exciting and relevant!) the clients “claim” on you will take precedence and no one will be able to represent you.
Next Steps and Part II
We’ve split this note into multiple pieces to front run the job search resources (which we will continually update over time). Later notes will review the pros and cons of using a recruiter throughout the recruitment process and will provide guidance to you on whether you should ultimately use a recruiter or not.

We also apologise.
Our own memories are very fallible. A constant issue, for us at least, short of the appearance of BowTied Archivist / Librarian / Reference is keeping on top of who does what in the Jungle and how to organise and share that knowledge.
Brighter minds than ours are aware of this, and this very subject may become both a very practical or very boring later note.
